For the other uses of "Vale", see Vale.
In the grand scheme of things, Vale ain't half-bad. Regular climate, natural barriers, and some serious boarder defenses means the citizens of Vale can spend less time worrying about survival, and more time just living their lives.

Overview Image Gallery

Vale is one of the three (originally four) Kingdoms of Remnant, located to the east of Vacuo on the continent of Sanus.

Like the other three Kingdoms, Vale is governed by a ruling council to represent and see to its people's needs.

The notable locations of the Kingdom include its capital, Vale; and the island of Patch.

Vale is the primary setting for the first three Volumes of RWBY.

Geography[]

Vale's natural defenses: mountains protecting the front and shallow waters at its back

Vale is located on the northeastern end of Remnant's largest continent, Sanus. It is bordered to the northwest by shallow waters and to the southeast by steep mountains. These geographic features make Vale a place of relative safety.

The Vale region is known to contain the City of Vale and several coastal cities, as well as Patch, a small island to the west. Beacon Academy, one of the four main Huntsman Academies of Remnant, is located in the City of Vale, while Signal Academy is located on the island of Patch.

An attempt to expand the reach of the region to the southeast resulted in the ill-fated extension, Mountain Glenn. Other areas of interest include the Forever Fall Forest and the Emerald Forest. The island of Vytal is situated to the north of the Kingdom. Merlot's Island was used by Dr. Merlot to help him continue his experiments after he caused the destruction of Mountain Glenn.

History[]

Due to the natural barriers of shallow waters to the west and mountains to the east, Vale has managed to endure the onslaught of Grimm and become a beacon of safety in Remnant. At some point, Ozma reincarnated into the last King of Vale.

Vale, represented during the Great War by the green figure wielding a sword

Around eighty years before the beginning of the series, a massive ten-year conflict, simply known as the Great War, came to an end. In this conflict, Vale and Vacuo fought Mantle and Mistral. Throughout the century leading up to the Great War, Vale disliked the behavior of Mistral and Mantle. This behavior included the treatment of their citizens, their use of slavery, their abolishment of the arts and self-expression and their insistence that their way of life was best for everyone.

Eventually, Vale and Mistral both set their sights on settling the small islands and peninsulas on the east coast of Sanus. The King of Vale, in an effort to avoid conflict, decided to share the land with Mistral's settlers, but his citizens disagreed with this choice. A riot broke out between two bands of settlers and devolved into the first battle of the Great War. Due to a prior alliance, Mantle quickly came to Mistral's aid, and for a while, Vale fought them alone, on both Sanus and Anima soil. Vale's enemies pushed for Vacuo to join the war on their side. However, fearing they would be conquered if Vale fell, Vacuo pushed all Mantle and Mistral presence out of their territory and allied themselves with Vale.

During the war, Grimm attacks increased worldwide, and as a result, Vale lost many of its settlements to the creatures, some of which were never reclaimed.

Vale's king at the end of the final battle

The Great War finally came to an end with the deadliest battle in the war's history, when Mistral and Mantle attempted to take Vacuo's Dust mines to cut off Vale and Vacuo's supply. In the ensuing battle, the King of Vale personally led his army alongside Vacuo's. It is said that he laid waste to countless men, thus earning him the nickname the Warrior King. Historians state this to be nothing more than grandiose hyperbole and suggest that this feat was aided by the unusually violent weather and Mantle's inexperience in desert combat.

With the war over, the leaders of the four Kingdoms gathered on neutral ground on the island of Vytal to form a treaty and plan the future of Remnant. There, all four Kingdoms' governments were restructured, their territories were redistributed, the tradition of the Vytal Festival was begun, and the King of Vale founded the Huntsman Academies. Vale's academy, Beacon, was secretly given the Relic of Choice to safeguard, and the King of Vale placed one of his most trusted followers in command of the school. As a gift from Atlas, a tower for the Cross Continental Transmit System was set up on Beacon's campus, enabling communication between Vale and the other Kingdoms.

Mountain Glenn was destroyed by Grimm

Sometime before the events of the series, an attempt was made to expand the city of Vale to the southeast, creating a suburb known as Mountain Glenn. However, the attempt proved disastrously unsuccessful when repeated Grimm attacks destroyed the settlement and killed its residents. The failed expansion was sealed off from the rest of the Kingdom. The failure of Mountain Glenn is generally attributed to its lacking the natural defenses of Vale, but the involvement of Merlot Industries was also a factor. After this, Merlot used his own personal Island to continue his research on Grimm while everyone else thought he was killed during the destruction of Mountain Glenn.

Grimm breach through the main city of Vale

In the past, Beatrix Browning founded Lady Browning's Preparatory Academy For Girls with Carmel Vanille being amongst it's graduates. However, the school was just a front for it's real purpose to train spies and assassins for it's allies such as Spider and Lil' Miss Malachite. Eventually however, Carmel left and married Jimmy Vanillewho was the city manager for the Kingdom's capital city and a member of the council.

During this time, Spider and the Xiong Family made a deal not to interfere with each other's business. Because of the influence of their leader Hei Xiong, the Vale Police Department were under their payroll and even had help from corrupt councilman Jimmy Vanille who helped them smuggle Dust into the city while also stealing some for himself and having it stored at his Estate. Because of their close relationship, Jimmy and Carmel usually left their daughter Trivia Vanille with Hei Xiong as he acted as her uncle while trivia's parents usually abused her.

After dealing with the abuse for too long and eventually being sent to Lady Browning's School to train her as an assassin, Trivia met rising criminal Roman Torchwick and formed a bond with him while starting to turn to crime and took the name Neopolitan. When they get caught up in a gang war between the Xiong Family and Spider after they broke their promise, they attempt to stop Spider from usurping the Xiong Family with Lady Browning's help. After planning to send a hard drive about the truth to Lisa Lavender and the Vale News Network, they learn that Jimmy and Carmel plan on becoming the top crime family in Vale and a large-scale gang war starts. While they succeed in getting the information to Lisa and expose the academy, Lil' Miss blows up the Vanille Estate by detonating the Dust inside while killing Jimmy Vanille and Hei Xiong, Carmel Vanille, and Beatrix Browning are killed in the war.

Following the war, Spider is forced to retreat back to Mistral while Junior Xiong takes over the Xiong Family with help from Lil' Miss's daughters Melanie and Miltia Malachite. After this, the Xiong Family starts losing influence as the head crime family and Roman Torchwick begins taking it's place.

At some point following his death, the King of Vale reincarnated into Professor Ozpin, who become the Headmaster of Beacon Academy. At one point, Gretchen Rainart joined Beacon Academy against the wishes of her brother Hazel Rainart. After she died on a training mission, Hazel blamed Ozpin and met Salem who he tried killing until she convinced him to join her Inner Circle.

Later, Cinder Fall travels to Vale to recruit followers for her faction, one of which being Adam Taurus, who is forced to work with her after she defeats all of his men. Afterwards, they recruit Roman Torchwick and have him steal Dust all over Vale, as well as obtain Atlesian Paladin-290 prototypes and use Mountain Glenn as their base for their planned attack on the main city. Once they reach underneath the city, Grimm manage to enter and have to be fought off by students and Huntsmen along with the Atlas Military. After they stop the attack, Roman is arrested and due to the reports of the events the Vale council remove Ozpin as head of security for the upcoming Vytal Festival and place Ironwood in charge while also informing him that they would talk about his position as Headmaster at a later date.

Before the Vytal festival began, the Kingdom of Vale started seeing strange types of mutated Grimm created by Dr. Merlot. Team RWBY and Team JNPR were sent to investigate these Grimm and discovered that Dr. Merlot was still alive and that his company, Merlot industries was still active and creating these Grimm using a special serum. They go to his personal island and manage to put a stop to his plans, but he activates the island's self-destruct device to kill them. They manage to escape the explosion in time and destroy his company, but whether Merlot survived the blast or not is unknown.

Beacon Academy in it's current ruined state

Eighty years after the end of the Great War, the Kingdom of Vale was the host of the 40th Vytal Festival. Due to sabotage, the Festival ended in disaster with the destruction of Beacon Academy and the Cross Continental Transmit tower in Vale along with the death of Ozpin. Beacon Academy became overrun with Grimm, and the presence of a petrified Wyvern drew in even more Grimm. This made attempts at retaking the campus and repairing the Cross Continental Transmit tower difficult.

After Ozpin's death, one of his closest allies Glynda Goodwitch takes his place as Headmistress of Beacon while trying to restore it to it's former glory. Many of the surviving students later transferred to Shade Academy while Ruby Rose and the remaining members of Team JNPR traveled to Mistral to track down the ones responsible for the Fall of Beacon. During the several months between the end of Volume 3 and the beginning of Volume 4, the Vale council voted to ban all air traffic not associated with evacuation. In "Of Runaways and Stowaways", a news network reported that Vale's council voted to continue the ban.

The Kingdom of Vale later hears Ruby's broadcast in "Amity", publicly revealing the existence of the Relics, Maidens, and Salem, and asking the other Kingdoms for assistance in Atlas. However, the broadcast is cut short and unable to finish. In the end though, nobody came to help Atlas as it is destroyed in "The Final Word". However after hearing Ruby’s message, Vale’s forces arrived in Vacuo to prepare for the upcoming war against Salem.
