I've mentioned this before but, I disagree with the requirement of basic cqc training. My main point being, how useful is it in situations you'll be forced to use it?
In the instances where you'll have to use it, you'll likely be fighting someone who is either a Grimm or is armed with their own weapon, possibly having shown they are skilled enough to disarm you from your weapon as well. In these instances basic cqc is more than likely going to do jackshit because you are facing a stronger and armed fighter.
Now I know what's going to be brung up, what about Qrow vs Tyrian? Qrow managed to ward off Tyrian while unarmed! Well that's because Tyrian was not only overconfident but acted like a complete idiot after he disarmed Qrow, not just killing him but rather letting Qrow think of something and manage to punch him repeatedly when Tyrian had already shown sufficient reaction time and resilience to make the event be plain ridiculous. Then letting Qrow waltz over and get his weapon which is even more ridiculous.
Basically, unless plot requires them to look cool and survive in such an instance, realistically they won't and the cqc will offer nothing. Events that it would help in would be so rare that it would not justify the time and effort put into training. Hell, instances where you would fe the need to use it in general would be rare, useful or not.
Back up weapons on the other hand, are a good idea. It would be prefarable if they were an exact copy of the main weapon, but if ut was a copy of just one it may be able to offer enough support and ability to fight back to allow the retrieval of the main weapon or the user to flee. Possibly to defeat the opponent, but that should only be a no other options decision in such a case.
